Getting Started
There are several ways you can setup your xbox LAN connection, actually to be be specific there 3 ways.
Direct connection to your cable modem/DSL (Diagram)
Connect through a router (Diagram)
Share internet connection through PC (Diagram)
What type of connection you use will depend on what resources you have. If you dont have a router or computer in the same room then you can go with a direct connection,
but if you own a computer then you have to use a router or shared connection. If you own a router it is highly recommended just to hook up your xbox
through your router. If you dont, and would like to use your computer and xbox at the same time then you can share your connection through your computer. for this you will need to use
your USB connection on your cable modem and have to have a Ethernet card installed.
You will need the following things to get started.
Xbox live starter kit
Xbox (duh)
Broadband Connection
Ethernet cable(s)
Router (optional)
Direct Connection
This is by far the simplest way to set up your xbox connection but you will be sacrificing have one then one thing connected to the internet at the same time.
This method is as simple as connecting your ethernet wire to your xbox then the back of your cable modem. Its that simple. then just boot your xbox with the provided starter disk and follow the instructions.
Router Connection
I think this is the best way to go connection wise. You can run your xbox with out having to have your computer on but at the same time can be on if you want it to. This will require you to have
atleast 2 ethernet cables and 3 if you want your pc connected. You will also need a router. I recomend Linksys. Follow the diagram above. Make sure the cable modem is connected to the uplink port. Your xbpx,pc,etc. can hook up
to any other of the ports. Then just follow the instructions with CD provided.
Note: If you have trouble connecting still then check out your internet service provider's website. If you have Charter Communications then you have to get your MAC/physical adress. Just goto
Network connections, Then double click your connection to your router/internet. Goto the support tab then Details. Copy your physical adress to your xbox under advanced then MAC address(Dont put the Dashes).
Shared connection with PC
For this you will need to use the USB on your cable modem. I DO NOT recomend using this method its a huge pain. You can only use your Xbox Live when your computer is on.
You also need a NIC Card. Connect your xbox to your NIC card using a ethernet cable. Then run the Network setup wizard (start>programs>accessories>communication). Follow the Instructions through the wizard. It explains itself pretty simple,
then shut off everything (router,PC, xbox) and try the connection. More info on this method Here
